DC's UPTown Renaissance

There’s a deeper meaning to Saturday night’s festivities. For those that don’t know, black people used to only be workers at the Cotton Club in Harlem. We either served or were the entertainment at the original club. Even the name of “The Cotton Club” was to represent the people who once owned cotton fields. The best in black entertainment at that time played there on a regular basis. This Saturday is a modern interpretation of The Cotton Club where the grand kids of ex patrons and ex workers now party together under one sound and rhythm. This event is part of this whole “UPTown Renaissance” that has been taking off since 08’. Along with several other movements here in the nation’s capitol, our goal is to truly bring the city together. We are all more alike than we are different, but we’ll never know it unless we interact. So when you support YEBies you’re not just supporting this movement, but you are supporting all of us who are trying to bring the diversity of DC together. Most importantly you are supporting yourself. The things we say or we put together are you. As you build the individual, the community will also grow.

First off, sorry for the lack of updates. The transition to a new site is a whole lot harder than I ever thought it would be. Thanks for bearing with me.

Ok back to reason of this post. It's Back!!!!!! This February 11th, we will be having our 2nd annual black history month event. This year's affair will take place at Zeba Bar in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Northwest, Washington DC. Staying true to what we do here at YEBies, we honor our past with this night that brings the different scenes of DC together to party, socialize, and network. There will be live performances from the singer/song writer Camari Drew and an eclectic mix of music from DJ Spicoli on the 1s and 2s. There will be several raffles going on as we also try to raise money for Louder Than Words Foundation. Last year we had a great turnout and were able to raise enough money to support several scholarships.

The Real Reason Why Gadaffi Was Killed

Many people have been mourning, not celebrating the death of Moammar Gadhafi. Over the years foreign media agencies have failed to tell the whole story about the often misrepresented Gadhafi. Over the years, the Libyan leader was portrayed as a money and power hungry tyrant for the world's uninformed to believe. They would leave out stories about the good deeds that the former Libyan dictator did for blacks Africans and other people of color across the diaspora. He was one of the last Pan-African leaders left with enough courage to stand up to outside powers. Gadhafi brought millions of black people who were in the shadows under King Idris when he took power to the forefront, afforded them education, and gave them towns and opportunity. His next move of pushing the gold standard and wanting his oil bought in gold would have created a shift in global economic power for years to come. His idea of a universal gold currency in Africa was going to be the catalyst for the unification of Africa and its economies. It called for a dramatic decrease in foreign economic dependency which would of given Africa more leverage in future deals.

Over the years Gregory was used his many talents as a comedian, social activist, social critic, writer, and entrepreneur to talk about race and its impact here in America. He is often best known for his autobiography Nigger which is still selling well since its release in 1964. His activism is still going on as he continues to live in the DC area. I need the athletic departments of schools in the MEAC, CIAA, SWAC, and SIAC to get back on their job. It can't be that grades are the issue why the talent will not come or get in. I put the blame on each school, starting with the administration over the years and it goes all the way down to the alumni across the globe. We have to do a much better job representing our universities and colleges to the youth. Having great winning programs equals more dollars for the schools, their current and future students, and their surrounding communities.

Growing up in one of the most historic towns for African Americans in this country, Vertus Hardiman hid a shocking secret under a wig and beanie for over 80 years. He was experimented on at age of 5 by a county hospital in Indiana during 1927. Vertus was one of ten children, all experimented on with radiation that day. This film tells his amazing story of strength,courage, and perseverance.

Its always great to see YEBIES across the global creating and producing amazing products that get embraced not by our community but by those who don't always understand our story. This short film by Destiny Ekaragha of the UK is a great example of this. Winner of The London Rushes Soho Film Festival Awards for Best Newcomer in 2009, Tight Jeans was Ekaragha's debut film.

TIGHT JEANS is a light comedy that touches on modern attitudes towards other cultures. It explores the ignorance we tend to have of one another, sometimes without even realising it.
Three black teenagers are becoming frustrated while waiting for their friend. A young white lad walks past wearing super tight jeans. The boys look on until one of them asks the pivotal question, "How can a man wear jeans that tight?" This sparks a hilarious debate about race and culture.

Selected and granted funding as one of the 6 short films to represent Lewisham, Southwark & Lambeth Film and Arts Councils in association with Film London.
Premiered at and was voted Best Short Film at the Times BFI 52nd London Film Festival by the Observer newspaper.

On this date in 1971 the great African leader Kwame Nkrumah left us to be with the ancestors. While alive Nkrumah was the first President of Ghana and the first Prime Minister of Ghana. He was one of the biggest supporters of Pan-Africanism and was a founding member of the Organization of African Unity(OAU). Kwame was a great leader for the people of Ghana and shining example for leaders of the newly independent African nations. His pro-Africa stance came at a cost as outside forces in 1966 would help overthrow his government in a military coup. He lived in exile in Conakry, Guinea, as the guest of President Ahmed Sékou Touré for the remainder of his life.

The last few days I have been on my Twitter account ranting about the current wars throughout Africa and how the one in Libya should be the least of our concerns if we are truly going over there for the reasons we have been telling the world. Somalia, Darfur, and Ivory Coast have needed outside help for their situations for some time now yet they continue to get the blind eye from the world. There have been no "non-fly zones" created to stop the governments or fighting from rebels in any of these nations. In Libya there is leader that has done a lot for his country and people over his reign. There has been no leader in the history of man who has was ever been loved and accepted by all of his people. It should never be the role of America or any other nation to create or get involved in Civill Wars of of another country. Domestic issues should be handled by governments and officials, not outside nations and rebels. As we get deeper into this current situation with Gaddafi this continues to look like old American politics with oil playing a huge role. Is this America's true idea of globalization? Occupation, removal of leaders, new governments, and control of oil and other goods for the good of America and its allies? If you look at the U.S.'s foreign policy and the CIA's track record since World War II many would say this is exactly it.

The news like schoolbooks, movies, oral history, museums, all have a story to tell of a nation's history and evolution. For generations across the world the main story has always been that of the experiences, lives, and issues of privileged white males and silence to the voice of others. We have to realize that news and history is not just a bunch of dates and facts but more of a interpretation of events that should come from multiple point of views. History should always have a chance to be rewritten because of the narrow filters we look through to see the world. Today we have the opportunity to have history written by many writers with incredible stories to tell. However we continue to let a select few control how each one of these great moments in history will be viewed for future generations. Here in the U.S. we like to make our history develop through a perspective that reduces the role of slavery, native removal, conquest, as well as racism, genocide, power of class. Without these often forgotten people this country would be far from the super power it became and lack the authority it currently still has throughout the world.

I hope for our sake and the future of America's legacy that things change quickly. We have to be honest and more transparent with our policies. We can't say we have a history of making moves that save people from their leaders, when we let Rwanda happen while Clinton was in office and Castro lasted in Cuba for nine different U.S. presidents in our backyard. We consistently back Israel and their terrible politics as they continue to take from the Palestinians. America's history in the Arab world shows us that there is really only one reason we are in North Africa right now. We can no longer let "black gold" control and determine our policies as the world continues to watch America and its leaders ever so closely each day.

On this date in 1878 Jack Arthur Johnson was born in Galveston, Texas, the second child and first son of Henry and Tina "Tiny" Johnson who were former slaves. Henry Johnson was of pure African descent, and traced his ancestry back to the Coromantees who came from modern-day Ghana. Jack grew to become the first African American world heavyweight boxing champion from 1908–1915. In 1910 Johnson took part in what was considered "The Fight Of The Century" against James J. Jeffries. Jeffries was a white former champion who came out of retirement to "reclaim" the title. The fight took place on July 4, 1910 in front of 20,000 people. In the 15th round, after Jeffries had been knocked down twice for the first time in his career, his people called it quits to prevent Johnson from knocking him out. The "Fight of the Century" earned Johnson $65,000. Johnson was the original owner of the Harlem club that would later become The Cotton Club

Tate Tucker- a student at Georgetown University that balances his studies and his budding musical career. With his debut mixtape releasing in the next few months, Tate looks to perform for his fellow student body that has seen him blow up, literally, overnight, after rapping for Lupe Fiasco in Michael Eric Dyson's "Sociology of Hip-Hop" course.

Kardi- a college student as well that has been no stranger to the music community. Hailing from New York City, Kardi has put out a number of musical compilations and will release his first album on iTunes in the next month. Kardi has opened up for XV on his home turf and he hopes to establish his presence in Washington, D.C.

Purple Monkey Sircus- a quartet of young musicians originating out of Cleveland, Ohio. Working with DJ talents such as Mick Boogie, these guys have made quite a name for themselves in the underground music industry. They have opened up for artists including: Wiz Khalifa, Big Sean, and the Clipse, leading to their large presence in the blog community.

Dom Kennedy- the Lemeirt Park, California native known for his strong allegience to his roots. Dom Kennedy has shone in the past few years releasing projects like 25th Hour, FutureStreet/DrugSounds, the Best After Bobby, From the Westside With Love and most recently, the Original Dom Kennedy. His works have gained him a great deal of attention from coast to coast, nation to nation. He's no longer that small artist from the West Coast, but now a well-respected front runner in the hip-hop community. Dom Kennedy will be headlining The Young and the Restless as his fans steadily anticipate the release of his upcoming project We$tside II.

Today In Black History: Freedom’s Journal

On this date in 1827, the Freedom’s Journal newspaper was founded. It was the first Black-owned and operated newspaper in the United States. The paper was started by a group of free Black men in New York City. It served as an counter to racist commentary published in the mainstream press. Samuel E. Cornish and John B. Russwurm served as its senior and junior editors. The Journal consisted of news of current events, anecdotes, and editorials and was used to address contemporary issues such as slavery and "colonization," of blacks back to Africa. The paper only lasted until March of 1829.

Today In Black History: Joseph Jenkins Roberts

On this date in 1809 Joseph Jenkins Roberts was born in Petersburg, Virginia, the son of free "Blacks" whose heritage was more than seven-eighths white. Roberts was a Black nationalist during slavery who would go on to become the first president of Liberia from 1848-56. At the age of 20, he immigrated to Liberia with his mother and younger brothers became a merchant, and also an unofficial aide to the white governor of the colony, Thomas H. Buchanan, a member of the American Colonization Society, which sought the return of American freedmen to Africa. On Buchanan’s death in 1842, Roberts was appointed the first Black governor of the colony.

From 1856, he served as president of the new Liberia College and, during a prolonged financial crisis, served again as president of the republic from 1872 to 1876. Joseph Roberts died February 24, 1876 in Monrovia, Liberia.

Forces backing Alassane Ouattara continue to attack loyalist to disputed President Laurent Gbagbo in Abijan, the former capital of Ivory Coast. Gbagbo still refuses to step down although Outttara is widely recognised as the winner of last year's election throughout the country and world. More than 370,000 have also fled their homes in Abidjan and there are more than 450,000 overall refuges across the country. Ouattara has gone to fellow west coast nation Nigeria to get help ousting his rival. Former rebel forces who support Ouattara still control the north while most of the army remains loyal to Gbagbo. The 9,000 UN peacekeepers who are in the country can not end the violence and the fighting has caused more than 70,000 civilians have crossed into neighbouring Liberia.

The Exile Is Over: Aristide To Return To Haiti

Former Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide will finally end his exile and return to Haiti within the next week. Aristide, Haiti's first democratically elected president in 190 years, was overthrown in 2004 and has been living in exile in South Africa. He's been in exile for seven years and wants to return to his homeland to get his medical school up and operating given the conditions in Haiti after the earthquake in 2010. Through his attorney Ira Kurzban, Aristide said he has no interest in meddling or being involved in the election. He has no interest in being involved in politics. There are mixed reactions from Haitians all over the globe as their former leader gears up to return to the land he ruled with a iron fist for thirteen years.

This date marks the 20th anniversary of the Rodney King beating. On March 3, 1991, a 34-year-old black man named Rodney King was stopped and beaten by white police officers in Los Angeles, California. According to the officers, King emerged from his automobile in an aggressive manner that suggested he might have been high on drugs. Before handcuffing King, the police delivered some 56 blows, kicks, and a number of shocks from a stun gun to the fallen body of King. A bystander captured the beating on videotape, and within two days the footage was being broadcast on national television. King brought charges of brutality against four of the policemen. The officers, who claimed they acted in self-defense, were tried before a predominantly white jury in a white middle-class suburb of Los Angeles. On April 29, 1992, all four men were acquitted.

On this date in 1936 Jim Brown was born on St. Simons's island, an all-black community off the coast of Georgia. At the age of 8 he moved to Manhasset, N.Y., to live with his mother after being raised by his grandmother. To most football historians Jim Brown is the greatest running back ever and in 2002 was named by Sporting News as the greatest professional football player ever.

The most impressive thing about Brown was success as a multi-sport athlete in college. In addition to his football accomplishments, he excelled in basketball, track, and especially lacrosse. As a sophomore, he was the second leading scorer for the basketball team (15 ppg), and earned a letter on the track team. His junior year, he averaged 11.3 points in basketball, and was named a second-team All-American in lacrosse. His senior year, he was named a first-team All-American in lacrosse (43 goals in 10 games to rank second in scoring nationally).

When Brown retired at the young age of 29, he was the all-time leading rusher in NFL history. He is now the league's eighth all-time leading rusher, and is still the Cleveland Browns all-time leading rusher.

On this date in 1982 the great Thelonious Monk passed away in New Jersey and went to be with the ancestors. Monk was 64 years young. Thelonious was a jazz pianist and composer who is considered one of the greatest musicians America has ever produced. Monk is the second most recorded jazz composer after Duke Ellington. By many accounts he is the founder of bebop. He is one of five jazz musicians to have been featured on the cover of Time.

On this date in 1942 Huey Percy Newton was born in Monroe, Louisiana. Newton's family moved to California when he was three. Along with his friend Bobby Seale the Black Panther Party was created in 1966. The party's goals called for full employment, improved education and housing, an end to police brutality and the exemption of Blacks from military service. Newton became the Panther’s minister of defense. The Black Panther Party established free breakfast programs for children, ran free medical clinics, and gave away clothes and food.

5 Keys To Success For Entrepreneurs

1) Put The Business Ahead Of Fame and Fortune: The process of making of creating a viable idea is not easy. Even after you think you have a sure thing, that's just the first of many steps to turn that idea into a profitable product. There are so many people who are more fascinated by the idea of fame and recognition than maximizing their time creating the best product possible. If your ideas have no real substance behind it, the process becomes ten times more difficult with your mind on the end.

2) Don't Be Afraid To Start From Scratch: Sometimes you may work on 3 or 4 ideas for years until the right one comes around and causes you to scrap all previous concepts. Instead of getting discouraged by the daunting task, use your past experiences to make this transition as smooth and quick as possible. There is always a project before the right project.

3) Be Ready To Hear No Very Often: Along with a great idea, entrepreneurs also have to have a strong will and thick skin. No matter how good your idea and product is, it takes money and backing to make it profitable. Continually getting turned down for financial backing will often make you second guess yourself and the future of your business. When someone tells you no you can’t be hurt for too long because that slows down the process of moving on to the next potential opportunity.

4) Lose The Yes Men: Family and friends can help create a strong support system but they often don't understand what it takes to obtain perfection. They usually become "Yes men" and it becomes hard for them to give the best criticism. You have to keep people around who will keep it real with you and not just stroke your ego. You should have a inner circle that gives you constant counsel and insight on your venture. To ensure you are getting good advice also make sure you consult people inside of your field as well as people with no connection. You want to have a balanced input as you make decisions that will effect your process and performance. It’s hard to take constructive criticism at first, but you will not be successful without it.

5) There Is No Perfect Blueprint: The problem with making a new company is that nobody knows your vision better than you. It often gets hard because other people have no idea how to market and promote it. Trying to follow approaches of other companies may help but are not the only way to make sure you are successful. Whether you are creating something new or an improvement on an previous idea, in order to stand out from the pack you must try something different. With social media becoming the way of the future, you can find ways other then traditional marketing to promote and expand your business.

On this date in 1990 Nelson Mandela was released from Victor Verster Prison in Paarl. The event was broadcasted live all over the world. In 1962 he was arrested and convicted of sabotage and other charges, and sentenced to life in prison. Mandela served 27 years in prison, spending many of these years on Robben Island.
